Moto X unveiled,Takes customization to a new level : Hands on review
It’s been a long time coming, but today, we finally got our hands on the Moto X, the first phone Motorola co-designed with Google. With the fresh announcement of the $199.99 Moto X, Motorola, plans to rewrite history and put its rivals on the defensive. it’s a nimble, compact handset that targets ordinary phone users with advanced abilities. Backed by its corporate parent Google, the Moto X boasts many of the skills its new Verizon Droids flaunt, plus a few slick extras. Better yet they’re all crammed into a highly customizable design built for maximum comfort. The phone itself is great, but the real selling point is how customizable it is.

Moto X Design and Feel
Motorola has taken a lot of time to choose the right size, shape, and button layout for its phone. With a 4.7-inch screen, it pushes no screen size boundaries, but it’s one of the most comfortable phones we’ve ever held. A Googorola executive told us that the phone has been designed to fit the shape of your palm perfectly. The body is made of polycarbonate plastic that bleeds right into the Gorilla Glass on the front, and the back of the phone has an arc to it.
The Power and Volume buttons are placed on the right side so that they can be easily pressed right alongside the Home, Back, and Recent Apps navigation buttons on the bottom of the X. It’s this attention to detail that makes it a thrill to hold the X. The phone is fantastic to hold and use, but Motorola’s custom manufacturing process is what sets it apart from anything else on the market. Instead of just buying a black or white phone, you can order it on Motorola’s new “Moto Maker” website.
It allows you to completely customize your phone in 2,000 different combinations.
There are 18 different backplate colors, seven accent colors (the color of your power, volume, and camera ring), two front plate colors (white or black), two different types of cases, two storage size options, 16 wallpapers, and many other options. You can even put a written message on the back and buy Sol headphones that match your device.
Wood backplates will also be available soon, and Motorola plans to continue rolling out new designs after launch.
Moto X Screen
By contrast the Moto X’s 4.7-inch 720p (1,280 by 720 pixels) OLED screen is quite large. The Moto X’s OLED screen technology produces vivid colors, deep blacks, and wide viewing angles.
Of course a display’s impact isn’t based on just resolution, brightness, and color quality. Case in point: the Moto X’s screen has an extremely thin bezel that lovingly hugs the front edges of the handset. This helps the X’s display appear larger than life and command your attention.
Moto X Hardware
Since Google owns Motorola now, the Moto X’s interface mostly sticks with the standard design and feel of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. On the inside, the specs are pretty good. It has a 1280 x 720 pixel AMOLED screen (and we swear, it pretty much looks as good as 1080p), 2GB of RAM, a 10-megapixel camera, 16GB of internal storage (32GB for extra $50), and Motorola’s fancy new X8 chipset, which includes a Snapdragon S4 Pro dual-core processor, a quad-core GPU, a language processor, and a “contextual computing” processor. Those last two chips are specifically designed to help it hear your voice and understand what’s going on around it via an array of sensors.
Moto X Software and Interface
The phone runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean rather than latest flavor of Android Jelly Bean (version 4.3). .Motorola has teamed up with Google to add plenty of neat tricks, the most notable of which is contextual computing, which company refers as the Touchless Controls, which utilize Google Now to answer questions for you. What’s different here is that you don’t even have to wake the Moto X from sleep mode to use Google Now. You can yell at it from across the room. It’s now possible to wake your phone up using voice commands. And it recognizes your voice thanks to three microphones, active noise canceling, and a voice profile that you help it create by saying some words for it a few times in a row.
Active Display mode also caught our eye. It shows you the time and some recent notifications every time you move your phone. Execs told that the average smartphone owner presses the Power button and looks at their screen 60 times a day. With this feature, the information you need may pop up faster. Aside from these slick voice capabilities, the Moto X’s interface essentially remains the same as stock Jelly Bean. The five home screens, application tray, and widgets are pretty much identical to what you’d see on Google-approved machines.
The Moto X will softly pulse important notifications and alerts on the screen, even when asleep, as they occur. Motorola says this will help users conserve battery life since they won’t have to power up the display each time the notification light flashes. Holding your finger on the center of the screen (and notification) causes the X to display additional details for the alert. Dragging your finger upward takes you directly to the corresponding message if you decide more action is required.
Camera
Equipped with a 10-megapixel “Clear Pixel” RGBC sensor and LED flash, Motorola says its new device can snap pictures with speed. It goes on to tout the Moto X’s ability to grab 75 percent more light than competing smartphone cameras. That should result in lower shutter times and clearer images under dark conditions.
The camera app, called Quick Capture, has also been revamped to be cleaner and more efficient. With it, the Moto X will go from pocket to image capture in under 3 seconds. Just grab the phone, turn it twice in your hand horizontally, and the camera launches without pressing a button.
Moto X Round Up
The handset certainly packs in plenty of interesting abilities and functionality. When you add up the specs, though, this really is a midrange phone. Hard-core Android enthusiasts likely won’t find the Moto X awe-inspiring. Expect the device to hit stores in late August/early September for a suggested price of $199.99
More impressive is that your custom phone will arrive on your doorstep within four days and is assembled in Ft. Worth, Texas. Yes, this is the first smartphone to be made in the U.S.
We need to spend a few more days with the Moto X before we know how we feel about it, and we wish we could actually try out Moto Maker for ourselves, but one thing is for certain: Motorola is finally making some moves with its unique blend of capabilities and design will prove valuable to ordinary consumers.
Google Hangouts
Google Hangouts SMS Support ‘Coming Soon’
As convenient as it is to message your friends with an all-in-one Google messaging app, a unification the platform badly needed, as of yesterday’s announcement we were still uncertain if the new product would support SMS messaging as well. While initially that will remain the case, Google says that a fix is on the way.
SMS messaging is a highly requested feature, and Google knows that. With that in mind, support for text messaging straight from Hangouts to your friend’s phone via SMS will be arriving shortly, according to Hangouts and Chat community manager Dori Storbeck.
There isn’t a definitive timeline on when exactly SMS will be arriving on the messaging app, but Storbeck assures users that it’s coming “soon.”
SMS support isn’t the only feature that’s missing. One-to-one voice calling is also noticeably absent. But Storbeck, responding to questions in her Google+ page, also says Google Voice features are in the works. Right now, you can receive calls to your Google Voice number and answer those calls using Hangouts – however until an update is pushed, you won’t be able to make outbound calls using Hangouts.
Hangouts On Air is only available through Google+ – although you can view other people’s HoAs – and can’t be initiated via mobile. However Storbeck says “the team wants to provide the option to initiate HOAs from mobile, they just haven’t gotten to it yet. And I don’t have a specific timeline.”
in case you weren’t aware, while 10 people is the maximum number of users that can participate in a Hangout, paid Google Apps accounts allow up to 15 partcipants.
Facebook Home for Android
Facebook Home for Android update adds folders organization
Facebook Home for android updates a feature that finally allows device owners to organize their applications in folders. The new tool was rolled out Monday through a Facebook for Android update.
Facebook Home is a suite of social-networking software that replaces the home and lock screens on select Android devices. With folder support, smartphone owners can drag one app on top of another to start a folder. Folders can be named, moved, and added to a person’s application drawer for even faster access.
The update also includes features for users of the regular Facebook app. News Feed stories can now easily be shared through private messages, and the app can now be stored on external SD media rather than being limited to your phone or tablet’s built-in memory.
Those who’ve replaced Android’s default launcher with Facebook’s social-centric alternative can download the latest update from Google Play now.
Google India
Google India shut down music search service
Google India has shut down its online music search service, Google Music India, which allowed users to search for music by entering names of artists, movies, albums or song titles associated with it. It also allowed users to play music online via partners like record label Saregama, Web18′s In.com and Saavn.
Interestingly, Google India has also officially confirmed that it has indeed shuttered down the service since a lot of legal online services for music were available that figure prominently in Google search results.
However, it’s worth pointing out that it was a ‘labs’ product. According to Google, labs products are experimental only and are not guaranteed to make it onto Google.com. The company says that labs products are essentially “for more adventurous users to play around with prototypes of some of our wild and crazy ideas and offer feedback directly to the engineers who developed them.”
Google had launched the service in October 2010.

Google Drive
Google Drive is a great service, no doubt, but simply installing the application, and synchronizingyour files is just the first step. These tips will help you take maximum advantage of
Google Drive, on the desktop as well as the internet – whether it is synchronizing files between
different computers or using facilities provided exclusively on the online service.
Move User Folders
You can move your user data folders (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos and Downloads)
by right-clicking the folder and changing the destination path
Change the location of the user folder
to the Google Drive folder
under the ‘Location’ tab in the Properties menu. (Windows 7 users need to go to the Explorer

| Save the Google Drive folder as the default location for easy accessibility |
panel to the left, Expand the collapsible Library folder, and right-click the “My Documents”
or similar folder to get the Properties menu.) Change the location of one of these folders to your Google
drive folder to synchronize it between computers. Do this on each computer you use and
you’ll have the same files in your Documents, Downloads, and all other folders on all your computers.
NOTE: If the amount of data you have exceeds the storage capacity of Google Drive (that is, if the data is more than 5 GB in size), then the above-mentioned function will fail to completely transfer all files. Once the storage limit of Google Drive is reached, you will be unable to add any more folders/files to
it, and in this case, to your user data folders as well.
Customize Windows Libraries
To utilize this function, you’ll need to have the offline version of Google Drive downloaded
and installed (the option for downloading is available on the home page of your online Google Drive at the bottom of the sidebar). Once you do that, you will get a Google Drive folder in your list of user data folders,
which is also accessible via the sidebar of Windows Explorer (it is in your Favorites menu).
Once you have the Google Drive folder, you don’t necessarily have to move files and
folders to share them – use the Windows libraries folders instead. In any library folder,
click the Location link near the top of the window.
Here, click Add..., browse to the Google Drive folderyou wish to add to the library,
and select OK. You can add asmany folders as you want from the Google Drive folder to your
library and even set it as your default save location. On doing so, later when you open the
library in Windows Explorer, you’ll see files from all included folders, and when you move or
save a file to it, Windows will place it in the default save folder.
Empty the Trash
Files in the Trash (as well as previous versions of files) take up storage space. After deleting
files from the drive, you’ll have to empty the online drive Trash
to completely reclaim your storage space. The Trash folder can only be emptied from the online
version of Google Drive. Select the More link in the sidebar, to
reveal the option for the Trash folder. Note: Once you delete files from the Trash folder.
Don’t forget to empty Google Drive’s online. Trash folder to maximize available space they are permanently removed. There is no way to retrieve those files after that, so be very
careful before removing files from the Trash folder.
Restore
previous file versions
Google Drive saves previous versions of files you’ve recently changed for up to 30 days, or 100
revisions – whichever comes earlier. These can’t be accessed from the desktop folder though.
You’ll need to visit the website (drive.google.com), right-click
a file and select “Manage revisions...” Alternatively, you can select a file, click on the More
link in the sidebar, and then select “Manage revisions...” from the dropdown menu.
Previous revisions take up space in your online drive, similar to Trash. You can remove previous revisions from this menu if they’re taking up too much space.
Install Apps
Google Drive isn’t just another sharing service that lets you synchronize data across folders – it can also function as a web-based hard drive for web apps. The Chrome Web Store contains a category specifically
for Google Drive apps. They can be selected under Collections Google Drive on the sidebar menu.
You can launch files in these apps directly from Google Drive. Conversely, the app can also
save files directly into your drive. This service provides great relief in the form of a location
where you can store your files, instead of scattering them across multiple web apps.
For example, Aviary for Google Drive is a very easy-touse and handy photo editor. The
Manage (and delete) previous versions of files saved in Google Drive
Google Drive-specific apps available in the Chrome Web Store
Chrome-based photo editor for Google Drive
app lets you pick any image file you want from Google Drive, edit it directly in your Chrome
browser, and then save the edited version of the file back to your drive instantaneously.
While it’s no Photoshop, Aviary makes photo-editing on-the-fly a lot easier and more fun.
